Supporting Strong Oral Foundations for Speech, Swallowing and Breathing in Children and Adults

Identifying the source of imbalance to create lasting results that have a ripple effect throughout your life.

A woman and child share a tender moment, pressing their foreheads together and smiling outdoors. The woman or child have possibly just finished a myofunctional therapy session and are happy about the progress.

At Source Myofunctional Therapy, we create personalized root-cause therapy plans for children and adults seeking support with speech, swallowing, or breathing challenges.

You may benefit from therapy before and after tongue-tie surgery or need to address long-standing concerns such as speech difficulties, tongue thrust swallowing, chronic mouth breathing or sleep-disordered breathing, choking and/or fatigue while eating, or avoidance of harder-to-chew foods.  Our focus is on identifying the source of imbalance to create lasting results that have a ripple effect throughout your life.

Language Pathologist + Myofunctional Therapist smiling

Sarah Goldberg, M.S., CCC-SLP,

Speech- Language Pathologist & Myofunctional Therapist

My journey began as a dancer, with a deep fascination with the human body and studying how people move. Fast forward several decades, as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), I continued to view my work with clients through the lens of movement.  I see the actions of speech, swallowing, chewing, and breathing as a dance that unfolds through complex and coordinated movements among the structures and muscles of the face, mouth, throat, and trunk.

However, early in my time as an SLP, I noticed something troubling—children stuck in therapy for years without making meaningful progress. It didn’t make sense to me, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was missing something important.

Everything changed when I discovered myofunctional therapy. It unlocked a new way of addressing the underlying causes of oral dysfunction, and I knew I had found my calling.

Today, I’m passionate about helping clients overcome challenges with speech, swallowing, and breathing. This work is so much more than a career to me—it’s a heart offering, a way to guide people toward clarity, confidence, and wellness.

I understand the therapy process from a personal perspective, and it has truly changed my life. My journey has included palatal expansion, tongue/lip tie releases, myofunctional therapy to repattern chewing/swallowing, and breath retraining. Having navigated this process from the inside, I am passionate and inspired to support my child and adult clients in optimizing their oral function for speaking, eating, breathing, and achieving restful sleep!

How the Process Works

Complimentary Consultation
A relaxed conversation to answer questions and determine if this is the right fit. If another provider is better suited to support you or your child, I will gladly offer a referral to better address your needs. Get started.

1

Comprehensive Evaluation
During this time, I assess the different systems that may be involved in your or your child’s oral imbalance (oral motor skills, speech, chewing, swallowing, breathing).  I also take an in-depth look at how the muscles of your face and mouth are functioning and determine areas of strength and those needing support.  You will receive a report, and if therapy is recommended, a plan of care (typically) 2-4 weeks after the evaluation.

2

Therapy Sessions
If therapy is recommended, we’ll meet weekly at a time reserved just for you. In-person sessions are the standard, with virtual options available when needed. Each session includes education for you or your child’s caregiver to support daily home practice, which is key to steady progress and achieving your therapy goals.

3

Treatment plans vary according to age and individual needs. Whether you want support for your child, yourself, or your entire family, you will receive highly-skilled, caring, and collaborative care offering the core building blocks for wellness rooted in strong, balanced and coordinated oral function:

✔️ Address tethered oral tissues

✔️ Streamline progress through speech therapy

✔️ Effective chewing mechanics

✔️ Optimize craniofacial development

✔️ Improve nasal breathing

✔️ Support orthodontic stability

✔️ Orofacial integration post jaw surgery

✔️ Avoid complications from swallow dysfunction later in life

✔️Optimize breathing patterns for a calm nervous system throughout the day, and restful sleep at night

  • Always balanced and fun...

“Sarah was my daughter’s speech language pathologist for about 1.5 years. The sessions were always balanced with fun and relevance to what she needed to work on in speech. Many smiles and laughs were shared during their sessions. Her weekly homework was not over-bearing and my daughter and I frequently performed the homework going to and from school and during normal conversations.”

    - Cynthia R.

  • Streamlined speech therapy...

“Sarah suggested that we see an orthodontist who recommended tongue tie surgery. After that surgery, progress with ‘R’ came much more quickly. As expected, as my granddaughter’s speech improved, her self confidence improved. Sarah has a gift for working with children.  She blended the hard work of speech therapy with engaging games that made it seem like speech therapy was fun. Sarah was so affirming and encouraging. My granddaughter grew to love Sarah.”

    - Judith M.

  • Beyond thorough in her evaluations...

“I couldn’t have asked for a better therapist. Sarah was beyond thorough in her evaluation and therapy and gave me more support and referrals than I could have ever imagined or asked for from a therapist. She takes a holistic approach with her therapy and care and I’m so grateful for that. Sarah’s empathy and patience made me truly feel cared for. Sarah is one of a kind. I’d recommend her (already have) to anyone who may have a need because I know no other therapist that will provide such exceptional care, thoughtfulness and support through the therapy.”

    - Fauzia R.

  • Great attention to detail...

“Sarah had great attention to detail when it came to the needs of speech therapy. She even referred out when it was appropriate to check for potential orthodontic work. She addressed my concerns with the recommendation from another professional that my daughter needed tongue-tie surgery (which she ended up not needing right now). We felt very comfortable with Sarah and highly recommend her to those in need of speech therapy!”

    - Cynthia R.

  • I’m able to breathe, exercise, and sleep…

“Now that I have had a successful tongue-tie release and completed myofunctional therapy, I can keep my tongue resting in the correct position and breathe with my mouth closed. I also now chew solids evenly on both sides of my mouth and I swallow both solids and liquids in the correct manner so I no longer have choking episodes especially when eating socially. This has also helped improve and reduce my TMJ pain significantly. I have also experienced an overall reduction in anxiety due to the improvements with my breathing and jaw pain. I’m able to breathe, exercise, sleep and overall live a better and much healthier life with less pain and oral/jaw issues.”

Common Questions

  • Myofunctional therapy focuses on improving the range of motion and function of muscles used for speaking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing. By strengthening these muscles and correcting old movement patterns, therapy can help with issues such as speech delays, tongue thrust, mouth and sleep-disordered breathing, chewing dysfunction, drooling and orthodontic relapse. It's a holistic approach that targets the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

  • If you or your child are struggling with issues like tongue/lip tie, speech difficulties, tongue thrust swallowing, chronic mouth breathing or sleep-disordered breathing, choking and/or fatigue while chewing, or avoidance of harder-to-chew foods, myofunctional therapy could be a powerful solution. During the consultation, we’ll assess your unique needs and determine if therapy would be beneficial.

  • I take a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to treatment. I work within a referral network of specialists, including naturopaths, airway-centric orthodontists, airway-focused release providers, jaw specialists, cranio-sacral therapists, airway-centric ENTs, chiropractors, and others. This collaborative network helps ensure that your treatment is as effective and holistic as possible.

  • I am out of network with all insurance companies. However, after each visit, a “super bill” will be provided, which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement based on your out-of-network benefits. It’s always a good idea to check with your specific insurance provider to confirm coverage for speech and swallowing therapy. Please note that while a super bill is provided, insurance reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.
